Oldenburger Tafel e.V.

Oldenburger Tafel e.V. is part of the state-wide network of “Tafel” projects that pass out surplus food of flawless quality to eligible needy persons. Schools and kindergartens in Oldenburg are also supplied with healthy food by the volunteer helpers. Beluga Shipping GmbH supports Oldenburger Tafel on a long-term basis.

“Food where it belongs” – this is the motto of the “Tafel” projects, carried out in Germany under the auspices of Federal Family Minister Ursula von der Leyen and in Lower Saxony under the auspices of Minister President Christian Wulff. In Oldenburg, too, the “Tafel” distributes food since 1996 that would otherwise be thrown away, but is still edible, to people in need. To be able to meet the growing demand, Oldenburger Tafel moved into new, larger and disabled-compatible premises near the railway station at the beginning of May 2008. The additional costs could not be borne by Oldenburger Tafel alone without deviating from the maxim of distributing food free of charge. To ensure that this continues to be guaranteed, Beluga Shipping GmbH assumes part of the expenses.

Through the voluntary commitment of more than 90 helpers ranging from 17 to 80 years of age Oldenburger Tafel supplies many people with food on the three distribution days a week. In addition, every week it supplies a basic package of food at no charge to six day nurseries, kindergartens and day care centres, five primary schools, around 30 elderly or sick persons in their flats and several women who are moving into their own apartment from the women’s refuge, some with children, among others in the city. Thus, it makes it possible, especially for children, to eat a healthy diet and take part in the common kindergarten or school class breakfast. Significantly more than 3,000 people with little money are reached by the volunteers and the influx goes on.

Oldenburger Tafel is a registered charitable organization that is financed by the payment of contributions and donations. Beluga Shipping GmbH supports these outstanding efforts for the public welfare on a long-term basis through financial assistance.
