Kinderhospiz Jona

The Jona Children’s Hospice, for which Niels Stolberg, CEO of Beluga Shipping GmbH, is an ambassador, supports families in which a child suffers from a life-shortening disease. The institution gives strength, creates freedom of movement and supports in particular the parents and siblings in everyday life.

Committed, specially trained volunteer staff members of the outpatient service for Bremen and the surrounding area support families in which a child suffers from a life-limiting disease or severe disability and assist the siblings and parents to cope with the consequences. Taking care of a sick child, even more so if the disease or disability is life-threatening, means an immense challenge and burden for the entire family concerned. The initiative to establish the children’s hospice service in May 2006 stemmed from the work performed by the Jona Child Life Centre of the Friedehorst Foundation, which provides a home for children and young people with multiple severe disabilities.

Funding for the institution is enabled for the most part through donations. For this reason families desiring support can receive assistance via the Jona Children’s Hospice free of charge at any time.

The functions of the support service include having an “open ear” for the personal concerns of each individual, such as support with hospital stays, grants to cover travelling expenses for members of the family who are supportive or the volunteer staff of the hospice, creating “free time” for parents, including courses offered for relaxation as well as care for the siblings and from time to time recreational activities with them to distract them from the otherwise prevailing worries. As a result, siblings are regularly delighted to receive invitations to Bundesliga soccer matches with Werder Bremen, for example, which they then follow from Beluga’s box seats.
