Beluga Sea Academy

Up to 160 male and female cadets a year can receive a traineeship for a practical semester on board the modern fleet of multipurpose heavy-lift project carriers operated by the project and heavy-lift cargo shipping company in Bremen. According to the German Shipowners’ Association, Beluga Shipping is thus Germany’s largest training shipping company.

Beluga Shipping positioned itself to actively counter the imminent shortage of skilled labour with its own training concept at an early date. In cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences Wilhelmshaven/Oldenburg/Elsfleth it developed a training concept tailored precisely to junior nautical and technical staff in the standard heavy-lift segment and updated regularly at the end of the nineties. This has continuously made it possible to gain important practical experience in working on board since then.

The Beluga Sea Academy was established in 2004 as a separate element of the corporate structure in order to consistently boost maritime education and training. Six modern multipurpose heavy-lift project carriers of the Beluga fleet are equipped with an additional cadet deck containing accommodations, a maritime library and instruction rooms. Some training vessels also have a workshop container. A specially assigned training officer, who at the same time holds a master’s certificate, provides the cadets with support in every way possible as their first contact person and supervisor. With the help of Beluga Shipping assistant officers, students doing a practical semester and ship mechanic trainees are turned into master mariners and chief engineers, for whom the doors are open for their future career directly at Beluga Shipping or in the maritime shipping sector, both at sea and on shore.
