START is the name of the pupil scholarship programme for talented and committed children of immigrant families that was created by the non-profit-making Hertie Foundation in Hessen in 2002. The START programme has also been running successfully in Bremen since January 2005 – thanks to the assistance of Beluga Shipping GmbH, among others.

Around 100 cooperation partners in nearly all federal German states give immigrant children or children of immigrant families the opportunity of higher education and better integration. The goal of the START scholarship programme for immigrant children is to enhance the development opportunities of capable and purposeful pupils with a migration background, encourage them to pursue higher education and thus improve the prerequisites for an academic career.

Through its “investments in minds” START is, overall, conducive to successful integration and consequently contributes to creating tolerance among young people in Germany.

Beluga Shipping GmbH has adopted five scholarships in Bremen. The shipping company supports five young people with a monthly educational grant for learning aids and cultural expenses as well as for such things as educational seminars, language courses, study trips and company internships on the way to obtaining a school-leaving certificate like “Abitur” (university entrance qualification) or completing compulsory basic secondary schooling. Furthermore, the support is entirely individual – some children or young persons need Internet access, others take part special seminars or receive assistance in planning their education, training and studies.
