As a public-private partnership between the University of Applied Sciences Oldenburg/Ostfriesland/Wilhelmshaven (Department of Maritime Studies), the town of Elsfleth, the federal state of Lower Saxony and Beluga Shipping GmbH, the Maritime Campus in Elsfleth represents a unique competence centre.

Nautical students and prospective ship mechanics, researchers and representatives of renowned companies will learn, work, conduct research and live on an area on the bank of the Hunte River in Elsfleth measuring 30,000 square metres. The ship mechanic centre with a boarding school will be available as of autumn 2008. The university extension and the Maritime Research Centre will round off the Maritime Campus beginning in spring 2009. The Elsfleth education and training site, once threatened by closure, will thus soon number among the most advanced and innovative in Germany.

Niels Stolberg, CEO of Beluga Shipping GmbH and himself a graduate of the nautical training school in Elsfleth, is especially committed to the Maritime Research Centre, making it possible to examine specific aspects of operational business as well as elaborate and further develop them on a practical basis, create a link between research and industry and further enhance the alignment of the Maritime Campus through varied forms of cross-site cooperation with renowned project partners. Work at the Maritime Research Centre focuses on maritime systems technology, initial and further maritime training, maritime infrastructure and logistics, maritime information and communications technology as well as environmental protection, marine and climate research.
